Scam Season Begins Again

Published on March 12, 2020

It's that time of year where millions of taxpayers are filing their personal tax returns and expecting refunds.  It's also that time of year where criminals attempt to take advantage of unsuspecting victims awaiting their refunds.  We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to verify any Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) correspondence using CRA's My Account (under the "View Mail" section) or by calling CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281.  Note that CRA will typically only communicate with you by mail; however, in various circumstances they may call you.  If you have registered for CRA's online mail service you will receive an email notifying you that a document is available in My Account.  CRA will never use text message or instant messaging services to contact you.  For more information regarding fraudulant communications please visit the Government of Canada's website here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/security/protect-yourself-against-fraud.html.

Below is an example of a recent fraudulent email received.  At a quick glance the communication appears to be valid but the bottom half of the message states "Regards, Service Tax" and the disclaimer refers to the "lovely people at Govca".  There are certainly some lovely people working for the government but this is not how they would conclude a disclaimer.
